Karate is a Japanese traditional martial art that proceeded from Okinawa. It is a combination with Okinawan martial art named “Ti” and Kempo (a martial art brought by Chinese merchants). Karate became very spread once after prohibited to use weapons and fighting against Satsuma region. (cf; Kagoshima-ken) in 1609.
In 20th century, sensei FUNAKOSHI Gichin and some other sensei from Okinawa had introduced Karate all over the Japan. At the same time sensei OTSUKA Hironori founded Wado-ryu Karate-do combined with Jyu-Jutsu elements and traditional Karate style.
’Kara’ in Japanese means empty, nothing inside, but in the Buddhist way of thinking things that couldn’t see are most important and with full of contents like the air we breathe, which looks doesn’t exist but without this the life couldn’t exist. ’Te’ means hand (Kanji character also shows with hand with fingers) but at the same time also means to protect things you carefully hold in your palm.
Considering all mentioned above, Karate is the art to protect ourselves without any weapons only with strength which is developed by continuous efforts, physically and spiritually. Essentially Karate means a way of life to improve our character continuously and to fight against our weakness starting with zero = “empty hands” on the right way.
